September 20, 2025 is the National Day of Dance. In Tennessee, this day is an opportunity to celebrate the long history of dance in the state.
Dance Tennessee Day is sponsored by the Tennessee Association of Dance (TAD). TAD has operated for more than 50 years with the goal of elevating dance in the lives of Tennesseans through advocacy, education, leadership, and policy formation.
Tennessee has a strong commitment to dance with a vibrant dance scene, encompassing diverse styles from classic styles such as ballet to square dancing to hip hop to modern to the traditional dances of many world cultures. The long history of dance in Tennessee reaches back to multiple historical cultures, including French, English and German country dancing of the 17th and 18th centuries, as well as Irish Step Dancing, movement brought to the area by African slaves, and indigenous Cherokee ceremonial dance. Dancers in this state have influenced the development of everything from the Charleston to Precision Clogging to Memphis Jookin.
Dance Tennessee Day is an opportunity for businesses and organizations across the state to share the joy and healthy attributes of dance within their community.
